Film Music of Hans Zimmer Vol. 2/Compilation of Soundtrack Material

Silva Screen Records is following up their 2007 release (SILCD 1238) The Essential Hans Zimmer Film Music Collection with a second volume of updated material to be released AS A PHYSICAL 2 CD SET on 08/16/11 as well as a download from Amazon, iTunes, and other sources. Zimmer with over 100 films to his credit has turned himself into the #1 ‘A’ composer of our current era and his sound, a blend of orchestra and electronic sources is universally accepted as a motif unto itself.

This new release contains previously released material as is usually the case with Silva. You’ll find some of the tracks on SILCD 1241, 1272, 1276, 1288, and 1316. But there is also newly recorded material from “On Stranger Tides,” “Inception,” “Sherlock Holmes,” and others. This release will be carried by Screen Archives Entertainment. Listed below is a track listing of the release.

Highlights of the 100+ minute offering include a heartfelt patriotic rendition of “Honor” from Pacific that will sure pull at your heartstrings. “Discombobulate” from Sherlock Holmes is also a good one as the strings offer the melody with good backing from the orchestra/electronics. “Homeland” from Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron is a proud majestic melody conjuring up visions of the open prairie and giving one a feeling of what America is all about. “Dream is Collapsing” from Inception begins with a staccato statement before the orchestra takes over and offers a spine shivering theme of what is to come. This reviewer is particularly fond of “Davy Jones” with its simplistic musical box melody until the orchestra/chorus take over unfolding a powerful drama. This is certainly a good introduction to Zimmer if you’re not familiar with his work and a good compilation if you enjoy listening to good snippets of material.
