Open Secret (1948)

June 18, 2011

Directed by John Reinhardt for Harry Brandt productions “Open Secret”starred Jane ‘Cat People’ Randolph and John ‘All the Kings Men’ Ireland in this ‘B’ thriller which focuses on Jewish hatred in a small town setting. A newly married couple stops to see an old army buddy only to find him missing at first and then murdered. As Paul Lester (Ireland) investigates with Sgt. Frontelli (Sheldon Leonard) they uncover a clan determined to rid the town of all “foreigners.” This is an excellent example of a ‘B’ film with a low budget that offers good acting, screenplay, and direction. There were only a couple of times that the low budget got in the way of the film. A young Herschel Gilbert did a nice score that includes some cues that you’re sure to recognize. Gilbert went on to do a lot of television work in the 50’s and 60’s. If you click on the “Sad Story” link  Sad Story from “Open Secret” you’ll hear a sample of what I was talking about. The film is available at a low cost from Alpha Video (4362D) and the soundtrack was just introduced by MMM (1960). Recommended (***1/2)
