The Shadow Strikes (1937)

May 15, 2011

While the film is based on the Walter Gibson story “The Ghost of the Manor” this is really not a story of The Shadow we loved to listen to on the radio for nearly twenty five years featuring Orson Welles as Lamont Cranston among many who played him. This film starring Rod La Rocque as Lamont Granston is a mystery involving murder, gambling, and family squabbles as to who gets what in the will. A fair amount of the story doesn’t make sense but consider that Hollywood taking liberties and you’ll find the hour passed by quickly. This is yet another film available on internet archive so the price is most attractive. I’m truly amazed at the number of films that are in public domain and available for free or for next to nothing from Alpha Video. Produced by Grand National/Colony and directed by Lynn Shores I rate this as above average viewing once I forgot about a man with super powers. Good acting. (**1/2)
