Mystery of Mr. Wong (1939)

April 20, 2011

The second title in the Mr. Wong series starring  Boris Karloff, Grant Withers, Lotus Long and Holmes Herbert of the Sherlock Holmes series in a tale involving the Eye of the Daughter of the Moon which ends in murder twice. William Nigh directed and Scott Darling provided screen play both Monogram regulars in this above average budget film. The presence of a film score from Edward Kay which actually fit the film improved this movie over Mr Wong, Detective which was sorely lacking. Karloff as an oriental detective with the English accent was far easier to digest for me after watching the first film. The plot by Darling certainly had enough twists and turns in it to keep your interest for seventy minutes. I was quite surprised at the murderer. This is yet another film available for free viewing on the internet archive website and the quality is acceptable. It is also available through Alpha Video as part of a complete set of the series for $17.00 at the time of this writing or individual films for $4.00. These would certainly be a welcome addition to your Charlie Chan and Sherlock Holmes movies. (***)
